From workshop to homes across Britain

Royal Oak Furniture began in 2003 when master joiner David Richardson converted a disused barn in Surrey into what would become our main workshop. His vision was straightforward: create furniture using traditional British joinery methods while incorporating modern ergonomic research.

What started as a one-person operation has grown into a team of fourteen craftspeople, each specialising in different aspects of furniture creation. Our workshop now spans three connected buildings, housing separate areas for timber preparation, assembly, finishing, and quality control.

What guides our work

Material integrity

We select timber based on structural properties and aesthetic potential. Each board is inspected for grain consistency, moisture content, and natural characteristics that enhance rather than compromise finished pieces.

Construction methods

Mortise and tenon joints. Dovetail drawers. Floating panel construction. These techniques exist because they work reliably across decades of use. We apply them because shortcuts become visible over time.

Finishing standards

Our finishing process involves multiple stages of preparation and application. Hand-rubbed oil finishes that penetrate wood fibres. Catalysed lacquers for surfaces requiring durability. Each approach selected for specific use cases.

Client collaboration

Furniture serves individual needs, not generic categories. We measure your spaces, discuss usage patterns, and modify standard designs to accommodate specific requirements. Your input shapes final specifications.

How pieces come to life

01

Consultation

We visit your home to understand spatial constraints and style preferences. Measurements are taken. Room flow is considered. Existing pieces are evaluated for compatibility.

02

Design refinement

Initial sketches are created and shared. Modifications are discussed. Timber options are presented with samples. Final drawings are approved before production begins.

03

Construction

Timber is milled and left to acclimate in our workshop. Components are cut, shaped, and assembled. Joints are fitted. Surfaces are prepared through progressive sanding stages.

04

Finishing

Selected finishes are applied in controlled conditions. Multiple coats with adequate curing time between applications. Final inspection occurs before pieces leave the workshop.

05

Delivery and placement

Our team delivers and positions furniture in your home. Final adjustments are made on-site. Care instructions are provided. You receive contact information for future service needs.
